The Fisherman and his Wife (First part)
There was once upon a time a fisherman who lived with his wife in a hut close to the sea, and every day he went out fishing. And he fished, and he fished. One day he caught a big orange and yellow fish. Surprisingly it could talk!
“Please have pity on me fisherman. Please let me live, I am not really a fish, but an enchanted prince. Please don’t kill me! Put me in the water again, and let me go.”
The fisherman said, “If a fish can talk I should certainly let it go.”
He put him back again into the clear water, and the fish went to the bottom. Then the fisherman went home to his wife in the hut.
“Husband,” said the woman, “have you caught anything today?”
“No,” said the man, “I did catch a big fish, who said he was an enchanted prince, so I let him go again.”
“Did you not wish for anything first?” said the woman.
“No,” said the man, “what should I wish for?”
“Ah,” said the woman, “it is hard to have to live in this hut which is dirty and is so disgusting. You should have wished for a little cottage for us. Go back and call him. Tell him we want to have a little cottage, he will certainly give us that.”
“Ah,” said the man, “why should I go there again?”
“Why?” said the woman, “you did catch him, and you let him go again. He is sure to do it. Go at once ! “
The man still did not really want to go, but he did not like to oppose his wife either, and went to the sea. When he got there the sea was all green and yellow, and no longer so smooth, so he stood still and shouted,
“ Fish, Fish in the sea, come here to talk with me. “
Then the fish came swimming to him and said, “Well what do you want ?”
“Ah,” said the man, my wife does not want to live in a hut any longer. She would like to have a cottage.”
“Go, then,” said the fish, “she has it already.”
When the man went home, his wife was not in the hut, but she stood next to a beautiful cottage and she was very happy. They went into the cottage. There was a pretty little sitting room and bedroom, and a kitchen and dining room, with lovely furniture. Behind the hut there was a small yard, with hens and ducks, and a little garden with flowers and fruit. For a while the wife was happy but would she remain satisfied?
