The Crow and the Fox
The crow lives in the wood next to a village. One morning the crow is very hungry. Normally he eats eggs, frogs, mice or seeds and fruit, but it is winter and he cannot see his favourite food. It is difficult to eat enough in the winter.
The crow flies next to a house in the village and sees some cheese in a dustbin. He is very happy and takes it in his beak. He flies to a tree in the wood and he sits on a branch. The crow notices a fox sitting under the tree.
The fox is also very hungry as he cannot find much food either. He looks at the crow and he wants the cheese. The fox cannot climb up the tree and he cannot fly but he is very intelligent. He says to the crow, “Hello, beautiful crow. How are you? Your feathers and your wings are lovely.”
The crow keeps his beak shut and does not reply.
The cunning fox continues to flatter the crow because he wants to persuade him to open his mouth.
“As you are such a splendid bird I am sure that you have a fantastic voice. Please sing me a song so I can hear your beautiful voice.”
The crow is greatly flattered and opens his beak to sing. Suddenly the cheese falls out of his beak into the fox’s mouth.
The fox laughs because the crow forgets about the cheese in his beak when he begins to sing!
Do you think that a crow really has a beautiful voice?
Do you think that the fox is wiser than the crow?
The moral of the story is not to listen to flattery!
